The members originally came together during a charity fundraising effort and promotion of the 2009 Raleigh SPARKcon celebration. The artists created a 15-piece collaborative work for display throughout the event. As an educational effort, we painted live on Fayetteville Street and discussed painting materials and methods with viewers. Proceeds from the silent auction sale of both the individual works produced live and the 15-piece collaborative work were donated to the Visual Arts Exchange and the St. Baldrick Foundation. The ChromaZones are currently working on collaborative pieces that will be donated to the Works of Heart Auction in October 2010 and the Visual Art Exchange's Love of Art auction to be held in the beginning of 2011. Exhibitions have included shows at the 311 Art Gallery and Port City Java in Raleigh and upcoming shows at The Clayton Art Center and The Page Walker in Cary.
We enjoyed these collaborative experiences so much that we continue as a group and look forward to exhibiting our works as a group, serving as resources for other artists in various educational events, and participating in future charity works.

Three areas of interest are the motivating force for my current body of abstract work.
I have been completely involved with digital imaging, retouching and design. Now I'm bridging that digital gap between my commercial work and my fine art. I've incorporated the use of computer design and large format printing along with new acrylic grounds and glazes into my painting and mosaics. By combining my computer art and fine art I have opened up an undiscovered area of creativity for myself.

Marianne Conti Burt
My work reflects the years of growing up in Chicago with a childhood filled with Italian culture, foods, holiday parties, our summer cottage and Bocce ball. I was the middle of six children, three girls and three boys. Two of my grandparents where born in Italy. In 1912 my grandfather Fabio Conti came to America to work for the family bread company, now still in operation. Along with my family's passion for cuisine and socializing was a grand appreciation for the arts.

I am a consulting engineer and an abstract artist. Applying both the left side and right side of my brain in my art produces complementary contradictions between delicate and riotous color combinations. I just love bright colors playing off of subdued shades. I am constantly experimenting and get great satisfaction from making happy mistakes. Spectacular failures lead me to even greater successes—plus I get even better views from higher trees.

Painting usually begins with color. I enjoy strong, saturated color and in particular, I enjoy the challenge of managing complementary colors within the composition. I often wash the canvas with colors and then work into those areas that suggest areas and lines. Often, the composition begins with a strong structure, evoking horizon, water and sky. My childhood experiences of gazing at the ocean in my native South Africa, walking the cliffs and the mountains, and reveling in the depth and distance of the landscape, continue to inform my visual repertoire.

I hope my work in some way will spark the viewers' imagination, pique their interest and inspire further exploration into the world of art. My abstract paintings spring from life. Inspired by the idea of abstracting drawings projected on a wall, I paint the strong and bold shapes I see when I combine and distort photographs of my own shadow. As I paint in acrylics, I may experiment with contrasts between soft edges created with a dry brush and precise edges obtained by the flow of the paint. I like to play with positive/negative space and various textures ranging from smooth to rough on the painting surface.

I am a visual artist whose works can best be described as “abstract expressionism.” Non-objective in nature, my works are expressions of my inner most feelings and thoughts about everyday existence. I find my inspiration from many sources—my extensive world travels, literature, music, nature, etc. I seek to convey an element of mystery and wonder that draws the viewer into my paintings. My creative process is intuitive, and thus I call my studio Sarah-‘N-Dipity, as serendipity often happens as I paint.

I invite you to discover a world of "Textured Abstract Meditation Paintings." I create richly textured abstract paintings in hopes they will help others relax, meditate and experience the joys of color. Painting is a meditative process for me and my emotions speak through my work. Art has always been my passion. For me painting is an intuitive process, and I love to take a creative vision and bring it to life in a work of art. Take some time to explore my paintings and get inspired. Escape into a world of Art!

I am obsessed with colors, since early childhood. Bold, beautiful, bright, vibrant colors. I labor to create a composition with dynamic expressive colors. That is why I often work in oil based enamels; they are glossier and brighter than acrylics. I will then go over it with acrylics to highlight certain areas of the painting.

I grew up in a colorless, flat, windy and cold environment. I started to wander, both literally and metaphorically, at a very early age. I was seeking anything and everything that was different from what my stark world had to offer.Through my travels, I found breathtaking new surroundings - in which vibrant colors, exotic flavors and sizzling temperatures flourished. Today, my paintings are visual expressions of this new found world.

I primarily work with watercolor on canvas but my intention is never to follow the traditional path of watercolor. I am always experimenting, using the fluidity of my medium to my advantage. Sometimes I will use printing techniques to achieve patterns, sometimes spraying and rubbing and creating shadows by taking the paint off as quickly as I have applied it. It's an exciting process because the outcome is always a total surprise and that is what I look for, the happy accident, when the very wet paint has a mind of its own and directs my next step.

I started painting in 2004, and haven't stopped. Starting with abstracts, I honed my craft through constant work, critiques, classes; responding to what moves me, what moves you and what can make a difference in how we appreciate our lives and the planet around us. Animals, birds and fish worked their way into my paintings, along with drafting elements, maps and natural palettes. Now I paint wildlife with abstract backgrounds and environmental abstracts. I will always paint, so I hope to always make people pause and look again, whether it's at an abstract or a wildlife painting.

My passion is mixed media collage, with an emphasis on the whimsical side of people & the beauty of our natural environment. The boundless nature of abstract collage allows me to experiment freely with composition, color & texture.

Texture, line, shape, color…all elements in my art used to evoke an instinctual response from the viewer. Manipulate these fundamentals slightly and it can change the viewer's reaction completely. This is the wonder of art's expressiveness.

My art pieces are conceived from "an educated yet, intuitive creative thought and visualization process". I post a philosophical statement to myself and work on it until I develop a basic idea and proceed to plan how to accomplish the same. After certain amount of sketches, studies, technical work and energy input into my art pieces, the same "come to life" and intuitively communicate with me, directing me on what they need for their completion "taking a life of their own". It is hard to imagine an inanimate object communicating with the artist however all matter has energy and all it takes is for us to observe and be perceptive to feel the same. I know that "Every thought is Creative", therefore it is my mission to produce a visual expression that provoke thoughts and conversation on behalf of the visual participant, leaving them with an impression.
